Srinagar: Guns were silent since Saturday evening on the Line of Control (LoC), where hundreds of residents from affected villages in north Kashmir were evacuated to safer places after Pakistani shells landed there, damaging several houses and a Mosque during the past few days.

A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was martyred, when he was hit by a sniper rifle fire by Pakistani troops fired from across the LoC in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara, while three persons, including a woman, were injured in Uri sector last week. Meanwhile, hundreds of residents of affected areas, who have been evacuated to safer places in Uri sector, are praying for peace and demanded construction of bunkers.

Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate shelling and firing from across the LoC in Uri and Tangdhar sectors in north Kashmir. Locals said that it was the heaviest shelling by Pak troops since ceasefire agreed by India and Pakistan in 2003 on LoC and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid said that due to firing and shelling in Uri sector, hundreds of people were shifted to safer areas and District Administration, Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and Army are taking care of them (evacuated people).

A police spokesman said that around 700 people, including women and children besides elderly persons were evacuated from  Silikote, Churnada,Tulawari and  villages affected to safe places.

After almost daily ceasefire violation by Pak troops on the LoC and International Border (IB) in Jammu region, Pakistan has now opened new front in Kashmir valley for the past one week, targeting forward posts and civilian areas in Uri, Tangdhar and Karnah sectors. (Agencies)
