Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the 12 km-long Sonmarg Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, built at a cost of over ₹2,700 crore. The project includes a 6.4 km main tunnel, an egress tunnel, and approach roads. Situated at over 8,650 feet above sea level, the tunnel provides all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg enroute to Leh, bypassing landslide-prone and avalanche areas. The tunnel is a strategic asset ensuring uninterrupted access to Ladakh and will transform Sonmarg into a year-round destination, boosting tourism, adventure sports, and local livelihoods.
