More than a dozen people, including police personnel, were injured, in violence over the last rites of a Hindu girl married to a Christian boy, in Nowshera town of Rajouri district
Shops, tractor and a place of worship was set ablaze. Seema Devi-reportedly converted to Christianity- had married Rinku Kumar (a Christian), resident of Sarya, Nowshera, working as labourer.
On Monday the body of Seema Devi was brought to her native village, where the family members alleged it was ‘murder,’ and was ‘forced’ to change her religion.
Police took the body into custody for post-mortem, sensing trouble. Violence broke out, when Rinku and his family tried to perform last rites of Seema as per Christian rituals (burial), but the family of the deceased objected, as they wanted to perform the last rituals, as per their traditions.
