New Delhi:  The Supreme Court Monday stayed the FIR filed against Major Aditya Kumar-10 Garhwal Rifles- by the Jammu and Kashmir police into death of three civilians in an alleged army firing in Shopian last month. The apex court issued a notice to the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government and sought a response within two weeks . Father of the Army officer, Lieutenant Colonel Karamveer Singh, had filed a petition before the apex court,.

The petitioner had claimed that the firing was undertaken to control “a savage and violent mob engaged in terrorist activity” .

The petitioner said the FIR violated the fundamental rights of his son. The chief minister Mehbooba Mufti had said the FIR filed in this regard would be taken to a logical end.

The Jammu and Kashmir state unit of the BJP had demanded withdrawal  of the FIR.
