Srinagar, Feb 24 : A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and a militant were killed while an Army officer was injured in an encounter, which ensued after a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched by security forces in the south Kashmir district of Kulgam on Sunday.

Official sources said that following specific information about presence of militants, troops of Rashitriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint CASO at Turigam in Kulgam.

However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there, opened fire with automatic weapons, he said, adding troops also retaliated ensuing in an encounter.

He said a militant was killed in the initial exchange of fire while an Army officer was injured, the wounded soldier was hospitalized. ?DSP (Operations) Aman Thakur also received critical injuries during the gunfight,? they said, adding he was immediately taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.

 

They said the operation was still going on when the reports last came in. Additional security forces and state police personnel have been deployed in the adjacent villages to prevent any demonstrations.

Meanwhile, mobile internet has been suspended in Kulgam.
