A workshop on transgender Rights was organised by Sonzal Welfare Trust at Srinagar on Saturday and brought together transgender communityactivists, and students.
The purpose was to generate awareness about the transgender community and to educate the community members about their rights. It’s aimed to open discussion about universal human rights and the challenges facing the Transgender community in Jammu and Kashmir.
Gender and sexual minority people are ostracized from community and are discriminated against at various levels. When people face these abuses, their ability to lead safe and fulfilling lives, work, receive healthcare, get an education, start families and pursue their goals in life are jeopardized.
National Legal Services Authority judgment recognsises their to the fundamental rights, that also include the right to livelihood, education, employment, and shelter. It also include freedom from abuse, discrimination, and violence, and fair opportunity for work and equal pay for equal work.
The Trust says it acts as a pressure group for the government to formulate interventions for this community and help in generating awareness which reinforce a positive attitude in the general masses towards this community.
