The State govt has approved reservation for people living along the International Border (IB) in three districts of Jammu region.
the decision was taken in State Administrative Council (SAC) headed by Governor Satya Pal Malik
People living on the LoC in Poonch and Rajouri districts in Jammu region, Baramulla and Kupwara districts in Kashmir and Kargil and Leh districts in Ladakh division were till now covered under reservations in `ALC Category’.
However, the people living along the International Border in three districts of Jammu region including Jammu, Samba and Kathua were denied the reservations.
They will now be covered under 3 percent reservations for people along with the LoC people
Social Welfare Department had submitted proposal on the basis of recommendations made by the Backward Classes Commission.
Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Dr Jitendra Singh said it was a grave Constitutional anomaly and human injustice with the people of International Border done by the previous State Governments
Jammu and Kashmir now has 3 percent reservations for the people living on LoC and IB, 8 percent for Scheduled Castes (SCs), 10 percent for Scheduled Tribes (STs), 20 percent for Resident of Backward Areas (RBA), 2 percent for Other Social Castes (OSCs) and 3 percent for Paharis, totaling 46 percent.
However, total reservations will go up to 56 percent as and when the Government decides to approve 10 percent reservations for newly created category of Economically Weaker Sections among the upper castes.
